Rickie Fowler finally a winner on the PGA Tour

Rickie Fowler has been saying for a while now that it was just a matter of time before he won his first PGA Tour title.

Sunday was finally his time.Anointed one of the game's rising stars shortly after turning professional in 2009 and an instant fan favorite for his colorful attire and rebellious ways since his first tournament, Fowler won on Tour for the first time by beating fellow young gun Rory McIlroy and veteran D.A. Points on the first hole of a playoff at the Wells Fargo Championship.

In winning in his 67th Tour start as a pro — and silencing critics harping about his winless drought and all the surrounding hype much too soon — Fowler made a birdie from 4 feet on the 18th hole to beat Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points at sun-baked Quail Hollow Club.

"It's a good feeling right now," Fowler said. "There's definitely some relief, satisfaction. I'm definitely happy. It's not a bad thing, winning. It's kind of fun.

"I definitely knew I was good enough, and it was just getting everything to come together and stay patient. It's been a wait, but I'm definitely still young, and hopefully this opens the door to many more. Obviously there were a lot of people that have doubted me or said I'll never win.

"So it's nice to kind of shut them up a little bit."

Clad in all orange except for his white shoes and cap, and leading throngs of spectators dressed in similar outfits, Fowler started making noise with five birdies in an eight-hole stretch midway through his final round. He shot 3-under-par 69 to join McIlroy (70) and Points (71) at 14-under-par 274.

Mahan Wins World Match Play to Deny McIlroy No. 1 Golf Ranking

Hunter Mahan prevented Rory McIlroy from becoming the top-ranked golfer by beating him in the final of the World Match Play Championship. The 2-and-1 win for Mahan at the Ritz-Carlton’s Dove Mountain course in Marana, Arizona, yesterday means American players have claimed victory in the opening eight events on the U.S. PGA Tour’s schedule for the first time since 2001. “It feels good,” Mahan told reporters after securing his second World Golf Championships title. “I put everything I had into that match.”

Mahan’s fourth victory on the PGA Tour follows wins at the 2007 Travelers Championship and the Phoenix Open and WGC Bridgestone Invitational two years ago. Mahan earned $1.4 million, while McIlroy collected $850,000 for finishing second.

The loss for second-ranked McIlroy ensures Luke Donald will remain world No. 1 for at least another week. McIlroy, at 22 years, nine months and 22 days, was seeking to become the second-youngest golfer to top the Official World Golf Ranking after Tiger Woods, who was 21 years, five months and 17 days old when he first achieved the feat on June 15, 1997. “He’ll be No. 1,” Mahan said of McIlroy, who won the 2011 U.S. Open. “He’s phenomenal. He’s really talented.” ahan, 29, is the first U.S. player to claim the World Match Play title since Woods won for a third time in 2008. The final was the first between a European and an American since Steve Stricker defeated Pierre Fulke of Sweden 11 years ago.

McIlroy was seeking to become the fifth European and second golfer from Northern Ireland after Darren Clarke in 2000 to win the event. A victory for McIlroy would have been the third straight for the U.K. at the tournament, which was won by Englishmen Donald and Ian Poulter the previous two years. Career-High Ranking Mahan, who is projected to climb to a career-high ninth after starting the tournament ranked 22nd, never trailed in the final and birdied the sixth hole to take a lead he’d never relinquish. A six at the par-4 seventh after Mahan made a bogey cost McIlroy another hole. A par was good enough at the next to allow Mahan to stretch his advantage and McIlroy found himself trailing by four when Mahan birdied No. 10.

McIlroy rallied with an eagle at the par-5 11th and a birdie at No. 14 to trail by two holes, which was as close as he’d get to Mahan.

Mahan’s putt to win the match at the 16th hole caught the lip of the cup and stayed out. The Texan sealed the victory at the next when both players made pars, leaving Mahan two ahead with one hole to play. The last time the finalists played the 18th hole was in 2002. “Even though I threw a few birdies and an eagle at him in the back nine, he still responded well and held on,” McIlroy said in a news conference. “During the course of the week he’d played the best golf and deserved to win.” In the consolation match, world No. 42 Mark Wilson of the U.S. defeated third-ranked Englishman Lee Westwood by one hole. Mahan beat Wilson 2-and-1 in the semifinals and Westwood lost 3- and-2 to McIlroy.

Third place is worth $600,000 to Wilson, $110,000 more than Westwood receives for finishing fourth.

Match play involves head-to-head competition over 18 holes, each one decided by the low score. The match is decided when one player has an insurmountable lead. In stroke-play events, which make up most of the world’s pro golf tours, the player with the lowest score wins the tournament.

Rookie John Huh won the PGA Tour’s Mayakoba Golf Classic in Riviera Maya, Mexico, yesterday by beating Robert Allenby on the eighth hole of a playoff. Huh made eight straight pars in the sudden-death playoff to win in his fifth PGA Tour start. The PGA Tour moves to the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach, Florida, for the Honda Classic from March 1-4, which Woods is scheduled to play in.

The next event on the European Tour is the Cadillac Championship, the second World Golf Championships event of the year, from March 8-11 at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami.

Johannesburg Open: Jamie Elson misses out as Branden Grace wins by one

Britain's Jamie Elson missed the chance to claim his first European Tour event by a shot as South Africa's Branden Grace hung on at the Johannesburg Open. Midlander Elson carded a stunning nine-under-par 63 over Royal Johannesburg and Kensington's East Course to give him the clubhouse lead all afternoon.

But Grace just about kept his nerve on the back nine, parring his way in from the return to card a final round 72. Elson's only win came on the Challenge Tour the year he turned pro in 2003.

Apart from that lone victory in the Finnish Open, the Warwickshire golfer has so far failed to fulfil the promise he showed in his amateur days when he was on the same Walker Cup team as Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty. But that could soon change if US-educated Elson, 30, can repeat the same form he has shown in South Africa this week, picking up a cheque for £123,000 - more than double his previous biggest payday. Already the son of former tour pro Pip is up to third in the order of merit for this year's Race To Dubai. After carding a first day 63, Elson fell back on the second day with a 75 before a third round two-under-par 70 kept him on the fringe of contention.

But Elson bounced right back into contention with another brilliant 63, a final round that included six birdies on the front nine, including five in a row from the fourth. He then carded seven straight pars before another birdie at the short 16th was followed by a magnificent 30-foot eagle three at the last, so nearly an albatross after his approach shot ran over the hole. Elson, who holed a 40-foot birdie putt on the final green of the European Tour's qualifying school at the end of last year to secure his card, could then only sit and watch from the clubhouse. But he had to settle for the runners-up spot again, just as he did in Madeira last spring, as, amid increasing tension, overnight leader Grace remained sufficiently calm.

Organisers had been forced to play catch-up for most of the tournament after thunderstorms and bad light.

But Grace, who had to return to the course to complete his third round on Sunday morning, finished the tournament on 17 under to claim his first European Tour title - and the £183,700 winner's cheque. Tied for third, two behind Elson, were a group of six players on 14 under, Scottish duo David Drysdale and Marc Warren, and four more South Africans Jaco Van Zyl, Trevor Fisher Jnr, Dawie Van der Walt and Michiel Bothma.

Hull's Richard Finch, in contention for the opening three days, had a Sunday to forget after completing his third round with a bogey five on the 17th before then falling away badly in his final round when he shot a six-over-par 78 to finish on eight under.

Lee Westwood triumphs by seven shots at the Thailand Open

Lee Westwood ended 2011 on a high with a seven-shot win over Charl Schwartzel at the Thailand Golf Championship. The 38-year-old Englishman fired a closing 69 to end 22 under and move above Northern Ireland's Rory McIlory into second in the world rankings. Westwood made a stunning start to the Asian Tour event and was a record 18 under par after 36 holes. "I've amazed myself really," he said. "It's been staggering. It's probably the best I've ever played."

I'll go into the winter with a lot of confidence and I'll try to come out next year playing the same kind of golf as I played this week, a little bit leaner and well rested. The Worksop golfer began the day only four shots clear of South African Schwartzel, having led by 11 at halfway after following up a stunning 12-under-par 60 in his first round with a 64 in his second. The gap was reduced to three shots when Schwartzel birdied the opening hole of the final round, but Westwood quickly struck back with two birdies of his own at the second and third holes.

Masters champion Schwartzel had a glimmer of hope on the back nine when he eagled the par-five 11th to, once again, get within three. But Westwood struck back with three birdies between the 12th and 15th holes.

Schwartzel then bogeyed the penultimate hole and slipped further behind with a five at the last.

Westwood, who has rejoined the US Tour for 2012, said he plans to take a break over the Christmas period and then improve on his fitness for the new year.

He told Sky Sports: "I'm going to continue to work on my fitness and all aspects of my game. I'm going in the right direction, I can see a lot of improvement and I'm happy with the way I've finished the year, I've won two out of my last three events. "I'll go into the winter with a lot of confidence and I'll try to come out next year playing the same kind of golf as I played this week, a little bit leaner and well rested." England's Simon Dyson shot six birdies against three bogeys for a 69, sharing fourth place with Thailand's Chawalit Plaphol, who shot a 67 which was the equal best round of the day with Germany's Alex Cejka, who was eighth.

TaylorMade has introduced a new franchise called RocketBallz (RBZ) which combines speed, adjustability and two clubhead options - RocketBallz Speed and RocketBallz Tour.

The revolutionary new driver franchise is designed to appeal to a wide range of players.TaylorMade's new RBZ drivers will be played by PGA Tour stars Camilo Villegas and Jason Day.

The TaylorMade RocketBallz drivers incorporate TaylorMade's patented Flight Control Technology (FCT) which is packaged into a modern, aerodynamically shaped clubhead outfitted with a lightweight, 50-gram shaft.

TaylorMade R11S driver unveiled

TaylorMade have taken adjustability to a new level with the launch of the new R11S driver, which features an updated sole plate for even more game improvement.

Based on the solid foundations of the existing R11 driver, the new model’s Adjustable Sole Plate adds another two settings to the club so golfers can now change the face angle of the club to either a neutral, slightly open, open, closed, or slightly closed position.

The loft of the club can also be altered by adjusting the sleeve through TaylorMade’s Flight Control Technology – what makes the R11S so impressive is that the loft and face angle can be adjusted independently, and now golfers can change the loft up to 1.5° up or 1.5° down.

The R11S also features TaylorMade’s Movable Weight Technology – golfers can adjust the weights in the heel and toe to help promote either a draw or a fade.

Tiger Woods ends two-year title drought

Tiger Woods moved back up to 21st in the world after recording his first win in two years in California.

The former world number one finished birdie-birdie to see off United States compatriot Zach Johnson on the 18th to win the Chevron World Challenge. "It feels great," said Woods whose 10 under total secured his first title since the Australian Masters in 2009.

England's Paul Casey, who was last in the 18-man field after a seven-over-par first round, ended third on five under. Casey, like Woods, hit five birdies in his closing three-under-par 69 to cap a remarkable turnaround in his weekend, while Scotland's Martin Laird finished in a tie for sixth on one under after a 70.

But it was Woods's spectacular finish that stole the headlines. The American began the weekend ranked 52 in the world after struggling with fitness and form and the implosion of his private life, but ended it 21st.

Asked to describe his feelings after ending his lengthy title drought, the 35-year-old replied: "It feels awesome, whatever that is.

"I've been in contention twice this year, which is not very often. I had the lead at the Masters on the back nine and had a chance at the Aussie Open, so that's my third time with a chance to win it. I pulled it off this time." The 14-time major winner, who began the final round one behind overnight leader Johnson, was still one behind going down the 17th but sunk a 15-foot birdie putt to draw level. Johnson then missed a birdie attempt on 18 before Woods drained a six-footer to clinch his first title since November 2009 and end a run of 26 tournaments without a victory. "It was a lot of fun coming down the stretch," he added.

"Zach put a lot of pressure on me. He turned the tide [with birdie on 16], next thing I am one down playing the last couple of holes. Then I made two good putts." Woods's three-under-par round at Sherwood Country Club meant he secured the 95th tournament win of his career and his first in the United States since the BMW Championship in September 2009. Johnson, seeking his first victory since last year's Colonial Invitational, was left to curse his form on the greens after closing with a 71. World number six Steve Stricker, the highest-ranked player at the tournament, who was second alongside Woods after a three-under-par opening round, closed with a two-over 74 to finish 16th on four over.

The World Challenge event was founded by Woods and his charitable foundation in 1999 as a fundraiser.

Woods, who has now won the tournament five times, lost in a play-off last year to Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell.

Cobra gets its bite back......

Cobra release their 3 new clubs for pre Christmas and we hear at HQ in Bicester that all three are head turners.

Here’s what we think:-

First up the Cobra Long Tom driver:-

This goes to the limit of shaft length with a 48 inch (4 foot) long shaft that is only 50g. The Grafalloy Blackbird shaft combines with a short Winn Lite grip which not only makes the club long, but also very light indeed at only 269 grams.It is this lightness combined with the slightly smaller 445 cc head that makes this club appear shorter than it actually is. With other longer than standard drivers you felt like you were swinging a fishing rod, but somehow with this even longer one we did not feel that. True, you do have to slow you tempo down a little but the results are great and the Cobra Long Tom gave long straight drives without the wider dispersion you would expect from a long shafted driver. The Blackbird shaft with its lovely matt finish felt very stable despite its length and the feel and sound from the titanium head was excellent too. Fashion or fad I’m not too sure but we really liked this club on the range but we are not sure if it delivers the extra 25 yards that the Long Tom Calculator on the Cobra site says it will. However it is not short and is great fun to hit and will certainly provide a talking point with your golf partners. If you can fit it in the boot of your car though as that is! Secondly the Cobra ZL Encore Driver:-

This is Cobra's third White driver and features upgrades from the White S3 Driver and previous ZL Model. The ZL Encore features a multi-material construction that combines a 5% larger titanium body and face with a carbon fiber crown and sole. The addition of a swing weight screw has moved the club's Center of Gravity and MOI further back to optimise distance and ball flight. The ZL Encore continues Cobra's line of drivers that feature E9 Face Technology with dual roll. This technology creates adds more forgiveness thanks to an elliptical shape sweetspot that is 30% larger. Cobra also add a canted bulge to the new ZL Driver, to provide added forgiveness above and below the centerline. The ZL Encore features Adjustable Flight Technology (AFT) allowing golfers to choose from an open, neutral or closed face-angle setting to fully optimise a golfer's ball flight. The Cobra Trusty Rusty wedge comes in three different finishes that are designed to rust over time for enhanced feel, versatility and shot making: black PVD finish, an all over pre-rusted finish and satin finish with pre-rusted hitting area. Cobra's President Bob Philion says “Cobra’s first Trusty Rusty wedges were loved by golfers everywhere. We frequently get requests from our consumers and Tour Players to bring these back. We’re excited to be expanding into a new category, revitalizing the Trusty Rusty name with new finishes and improved technology." Developed in partnership with short-game guru Phil Rodgers, each Cobra Trusty Rusty wedge is made from 100% raw, non-plated carbon steel that is 7% softer than standard chrome. The Tri-Bounce Sole featuring a Rear Scallop increases the bounce in the centre of the club for forgiveness but also maintains a low leading edge. The grooves on the Cobra Trusty Rusty wedge are laser machined with post-laser milling creating four distinct surface roughness’s resulting in the maximum allowable spin.
